Stony Brook University utilizes PointSolutions (previously Turning Technologies) polling clickers for interactive, wireless, student responses in classrooms and large lecture halls. PointSolutions allows instructors to float a poll bar above any application, and gives the ability to track each student's performance data generated during a lesson or team activity. This tracking produces student and class performance reports with respect to lessons.

The Data Management Plan Tool (DMP Tool) is an online resource that is meant to assist researchers in creating data management plans as required by most grant proposals.


Data Wiping

To prevent the inadvertent transfer of sensitive and/or personal data to unauthorized parties, the New York State Office of General Services (NYS-OGS) requires all surplus IT equipment to be cleansed of all data before disposing or repurposing. It is expected that all data be erased from the hard drive (and any other media) in such a manner that it cannot be recovered. Customer Engagement and Support can provide this service on an as-needed basis. It is recommended that when repurposing equipment (e.g. moving machines between personnel or departments), that the machine be cleaned of any University data before the swap.

Electronic Post Office (EPO)

Stony Brook University maintains an electronic post office (EPO) for all students, faculty and staff. The EPO is essentially a mail forwarding device that allows everyone at the University to have the same generic email address (@stonybrook.edu) so that no matter what email system Stony Brook may adopt or what domain names change, people will still receive their email.

Stony Brook University is registered with the InCommon Certificate Service, a means for IT partners and the University community to easily and affordably obtain digital certificates for the safe sharing of online resources, such as the securing of departmental Web servers.

The InCommon Certificate Service provides unlimited SSL, encryption and code signing PKI certificates for all domains owned by Stony Brook University for one fixed annual fee, allowing Stony Brook to issue certificates based on technical and security needs. The certificates are generated through Sectigo, a trusted commercial certificate authority.

Malware Shield

Stony Brook's Data Network Services and IT Security teams added additional security to the campus network during the summer of 2010. A network name server was implemented to check the URLs of websites that users on campus visit against a list of known distributors of malware. Instead of visiting a site that is known to be a distributor of malware, the Web browser is redirected to a malware shield (Web page) which advises users why the site they are trying to reach may have been flagged as being potentially harmful.

Qualtrics cannot be used for clinical purposes or to collect data considered Protected Health Information (PHI). Confirm with IRB if you can use Qualtrics for your research.

While DoIT encourages students, faculty, and staff to first investigate Google Drive or Google Sites to handle collaborative projects among teams, SharePoint is certainly a viable alternative.  SharePoint is HIPAA and export compliant.

Single Sign On (SSO)

In an effort to decrease the number of passwords required to access computing applications across the University, DoIT has incrementally implemented its Web-based, NetID Single Sign On (SSO) service since 2008. Users can log in to campus applications such as Google Apps for Education and WolfMart without having to sign on multiple times or remember many passwords. The SSO service is only used for those applications accessed through a Web browser. Client-based applications, such as the mail client on a smart phone, do not use the Stony Brook SSO.

DoIT's TLT Educational Technologies department maintains the local origination system for both the residential and hospital cable TV system in accordance with the Policy on Use of Campus Cable Television System. Each system has locally-originated channels (see channel lineup below) that includes satellite, electronic bulletin board, and video playback systems. Most of the residential channels are programmed by other departments, but run through the Educational Technologies system. Educational Technologies is not responsible for other programming (purchasing entertainment or news channels) or transmission (reception problems). Students experiencing problems with reception or concerns about non-locally originated programming should contact their RHD.


Virtual SINC Site

The Virtual SINC Site provides a way for students, faculty, and staff members to access site-licensed, academic software titles directly from their personal computers from either on or off campus 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Students can also use the Virtual SINC Site to access the Print From Anywhere service using any device or operating system.

It is available to all faculty, students, and staff. New locations continue to be added as wireless technology and equipment continues to be upgraded and enhanced in order to handle the growing number of devices seeking to connect to the network. For visitors to the University, WolfieNet-Guest is the recommended network to use.
