To Subscribe to a listserv

Send an email to Stony Brook's listserv system:  listserv@lists.sunysb.edu

Leave the subject line blank.  

In the message body, type "subscribe", listname, first name and then last name separated by spaces.

Example:

To:  listserv@lists.sunysb.edu

Subject:  [blank] 

Body:  subscribe  HEA-Jobs  John  Smith

To unsubscribe from a listserv

Send an email to Stony Brook's listserv system:  listserv@lists.sunysb.edu

Leave the subject line blank.  

In the message body, type "unsubscribe" and listname separated by spaces.

If you are signing into the Listserv Management page for the first time, or if you have forgotten your LISTSERV password, you can set up/retrieve your password by going to the following site: https://lists.sunysb.edu/

Once you are on the Listserv Management page, you will see a link called Get Password on the right-hand side of your screen under Options.  

If you click that link, you will be prompted to enter your email address as well as a new LISTSERV password.  The password you enter here will be your new LISTSERV password, and replace your old LISTSERV password if you have forgotten it.

It is preferable to have at least 2 or more owners should one leave the university. 

The instructions will show you how to add or remove Owners, Editors, and Moderators.

1. Log in to the Listserv Web Interface at https://lists.sunysb.edu 
2. Click List Management > List Configuration > List Configuration Tasks.
   
3. Under Select List, choose the list you want to manage from the drop-down arrow ▼
   
4. Under the Administrators tab, enter or remove email addresses in the Owner= (or Editor=, Moderator=, or other) field.
   • Listing anyone in the Quiet field will give them owner privileges without receiving delivery error notifications.
     
5. Click Save.

1. Log into https://lists.sunysb.edu
2. Click List Management > List Configuration > List Configuration Wizard > List Maintenance tab (light blue)
3. Choose your list from the drop-down on top if you have access to more than one listserv.
4. Add emails to the Moderator field.  Change the drop-down to All so that all Moderators get an email notification.  
   *Note:  By default, Owners are moderators too.  So if you need more assistance with managing your list you can add more owners.
   

If you are the owner of a listserv, you have the ability to add subscribers to a closed list, or one that requires permission to subscribe.

Adding subscribers to your list through email:

Adding subscribers one at a time

1. Compose an email to listserv@lists.sunysb.edu
2. Leave the subject line blank
3. In the body of the email, put "ADD YourList-L Firstname.Lastname@stonybrook.edu Firstname Lastname" (i.e. ADD MyList-L Fred.Flintstone@stonybrook.edu Fred Flintstone and remember to substitute "MyList-L" with your list)
4. Send your email

Adding multiple subscribers at once

1. Compose an email to listserv@lists.sunysb.edu

If you are the owner of a listserv, you have the ability to add subscribers to a closed list, or one that requires permission to subscribe.

Adding subscribers to your list using the Listserv Management page:

To add subscribers one at a time:

1. Log into the Listserv Management page (https://lists.sunysb.edu/index) using your email address and LISTSERV password
2. Choose List Management and then Subscriber Management
3. Choose which list you would like to add a subscriber to
4. Under Add New Subscriber, enter the new member's email address (Firstname.Lastname@stonybrook.edu) and then their first and last name (i.e. Fred.Flintstone@stonybrook.edu Fred Flintstone)
5. You will have the option to either notify the user that they have been added, or not
6. Click Add to <listname>

To add more than one subscriber at a time:

1. In order to add multiple people to your list at once, you must create a plain text file (.txt) containing the email address and names of each subscriber (each subscriber should be on a different line) so you can import the subscribers
   
2. Log into the Listserv Management page (https://lists.sunysb.edu/index) using your email address and LISTSERV password
3. Choose List Management and then Subscriber Management
4. Choose which list you would like to add subscribers to
5. Click Bulk Operations and choose the option to add subscribers
6. Browse for the text file (.txt) that contains the email addresses and names of the users you want to subscribe and click Import
7. Once the subscribers have been added to your list, you will receive a confirmation

If you were the owner of a LISTSERV prior to the move to Google and would like your new Stony Brook Google Apps for Education account to be an owner of your list, follow these simple directions:

1. Log into the Listserv Management page (https://lists.sunysb.edu/) using your email address and LISTSERV password
2. Click List Management on the top left-hand side of your screen
3. Choose List Dashboard
4. Find the name of the list that you want to change and click Configure
5. Click List Maintenance
6. Make the necessary changes (if you are changing your email address to your new Google Apps for Education, remember it should be Firstname.Lastname@stonybrook.edu)
7. Click Save to save the changes you have made

Removing subscribers to your list using the LISTSERV Management page:

To remove subscribers one at a time:

1. Log into the LISTSERV Management page (https://lists.sunysb.edu/index) using your email address and LISTSERV password
2. Choose List Management and then Subscriber Management
3. Choose which list you would like to add a subscriber to
4. Under Examine or Delete Subscription, enter the email address of the person you want to remove from your list (if you do not know the person's full name or entire email address, you can search for them, otherwise put an asterisk (*)
5. Choose Search in <listname>
6. If a match is found, you will see the user's information, and if multiple users are found, you can choose which one you want to remove
7. You will have the option to either notify the user that they have been removed, or not
8. Click Delete

To remove more than one subscriber at a time:

1. In order to add multiple people to your list at once, you must create a plain text file (.txt) containing the email address of each subscriber you wish to remove (each subscriber should be on a different line)
2. Log into the LISTSERV Management page (https://lists.sunysb.edu/index) using your email address and LISTSERV password
3. Choose List Management and then Subscriber Management
4. Choose which list you would like to add subscribers to
5. Click Bulk Operations and choose the option to remove subscribers from your list
6. Browse for the text file (.txt) that containts the email addresses of the users you want to remove and click Import
7. Once the subscribers have been removed from your list, you will receive a confirmation

You can add subscribers individually and in bulk from a spreadsheet via email or the Listserv application.

This article explains how to add an individual from the Listserv application. 

1. Log into Stony Brook's Listserv by going to this page and clicking Log In at the top right corner of your screen:  http://lists.sunysb.edu/
2. Under List Management click Subscriber Management
   
3. Select your List then toward the bottom of the page, enter the new subscribers email addess, first name and last name separated by a single space in the field provided. 
   i.e.  john.smith@stonybrook.edu John Smith
   
4. Click the Add to [list name] button.
5. A confirmation will appear at the top of your screen that the subscriber was added.

There are two types of LISTSERVs:

• Open Lists - Allow anyone to subscribe to and sometimes reply to emails that are sent. Anyone can join an open list.
• Closed Lists - Only the list owner can add people to the list. Users require permission to subscribe to a closed list. Generally, the owner of the list will add you to a list of subscribers, and allow you to reply to the list if necessary.

Owners have more administrative work to do on closed lists than open lists.

Every LIST needs an owner to take care of administrative issues.

Once you have been added to a list, you are considered to be a subscriber to that list.
