Accounts
SOLAR and NetID act as access keys to important Stony Brook University services that are essential to your success during your time here. Learn how to access SOLAR and NetID and the difference between these two services.
SOLAR
SOLAR is Stony Brook University’s enterprise-wide, self-service system which provides faculty, staff, and students with online access to manage personal information. Using SOLAR, you can access class rosters, set your NetID password, maintain your SB Alert information and more. Your SOLAR ID is a 9-digit number that will be provided to you during the orientation process. Your initial SOLAR ID password is your birthday in MMDDYY format.
NetID
Use your NetID/NetID password to sign into most every other computer system/resource (e.g., Google Applications, WebEx, Etc). Every active employee, student, and faculty member is assigned a NetID, and you can get started by setting up your NetID password using the Password Reset Tool.
Duo Two-step Login
Duo Two-Step Login protects your account, even if your password is stolen. Two-step login means that after you enter your password to log in, you are then prompted to approve this login from a device, like your smartphone.
WolfieNet
WolfieNet is Stony Brook University's wireless network (wifi) on West Campus, Southampton, Manhattan and parts of East Campus. It is available to all faculty, students, staff and guests.
Get-Connected
Use for the first time when connecting to WolfieNet. This option configures Wi-Fi enabled devices to use WolfieNet properly.
Eduroam
Secure, world-wide roaming access service developed for the international research and education community.
Secure
This network that should be used on a day-to-day basis after successfully configuring your Wi-Fi devices through WolfieNet-Get-Connected.
Guest
To be used by visitors to the University who do not have a NetID. Users must authenticate and agree to the Wireless Internet Policy.
Open/IoT
Available only in residence halls for gaming systems. Do not use for academic work or transactions such as banking or online shopping.
Wired Networking & Phones
Wired Networking
Need to request a wired network drop for your office or lab? Network Services provides the cabling infrastructure for the University which serves all voice, data, and television needs.
Cisco Webex & Phones
Cisco Webex is our Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) provider which is a cloud-based system that works across a multitude of devices, including your desktop computer, laptop, and cellphone. In many cases, a traditional desk phone may not be needed.
VPN
Stony Brook's virtual private network (VPN) allows access to certain Stony Brook applications, resources, and services from off-campus.
Google Workspace for West Campus Faculty and Staff
All West Campus employees receive access to Stony Brook’s Google Workspace which includes Google Mail, Calendar, Drive, Contacts, Sites, and more.
Access it by going to stonybrook.edu/mycloud and using your NetID and NetID password to sign in.
Gmail
Read and compose messages online and offline, use powerful Google search features and organize your email with helpful sorting tools.
Calendar
Share your schedule and events with others, keep track of tasks and sync your calendar with mobile devices and other computers.
Drive
Collaborate with others on documents in real time, leave comments, suggest edits, and view revision history with unlimited storage.
Meet
Connect and collaborate with colleagues and get fast answers to your questions through messaging.
Microsoft Exchange for Stony Brook Medicine Employees
School of Medicine and School of Dental Medicine, receive Microsoft Exchange/Outlook email accounts which can be accessed at webmail.sbumed.org and using your UHMC Domain username and password to access your Stony Brook Medicine email.
Web Conferencing
Zoom
Zoom is a video and audio conferencing tool with easy collaboration, chat, screen sharing, recording and more across mobile devices, desktops, and telephones. Log in with your NetID and NetID password.
Software
Stony Brook University offers a variety of software to assist faculty and staff with their computing needs. Here are several important software assets.
Office 365
Log in to office365.com with your Stony Brook email address to download Office 365.
Windows
Visit stonybrook.onthehub.com to install the latest version of Microsoft Windows.
Virtual SINC Site
Access academic software from your personal computer by using the Virtual SINC Site (VSS).
Hardware
The Division of Information Technology’s Client Support department has instituted hardware support standards. Here are the recommended desktop and laptop manufacturers and mobile device operating systems.
Institutional Hardware Recommendations
DoIT provides a list of supported Dell PC's and Laptops, Apple Desktops and Laptops, Phones and Tablets as well as information on how to make a purchase.
Equipment & Hardware Support
DoIT provides support for all University managed devices and can offer limited assistance on University supported devices

Institute for Advanced Computational Science (IACS)
The mission of the IACS is to make sustained advances in the fundamental techniques of computation and in high-impact applications with a vision that it will be an internationally-recognized institute having vibrant multidisciplinary research and education programs with demonstrated economic benefit to New York State.
Office of the Vice President for Research
The Office of the Vice President for Research helps strategically position the University to be successful in attracting external support for research from federal and other government sources, industry, private foundations, philanthropy, and through partnerships with allied organizations such as Brookhaven National Lab, Cold Spring Harbor, and others. It facilitates the process of applying for grants and contracts and manages awards to ensure that research is carried out successfully and that the requirements of sponsoring agencies are fulfilled.
University Libraries
Stony Brook Libraries are known for a wide range of print and digital resources and world-renowned special collections. The Stony Brook Libraries belong to the Association of Research Libraries (ARL), with a Health Sciences Center Library that is a member of the Association of Academic Health Sciences Libraries. The Libraries’ collection exceeds 2 million volumes, including eBooks, print and electronic holdings of scholarly journal subscriptions, microforms, music recordings, and a sizable map collection.

When In Doubt Throw It Out
Links in email, posts and online advertising are often how cybercriminals compromise your computer. If it looks suspicious, even if you know the source, it’s best to delete or mark as junk.
Think before you act

Stony Brook community members are the best incident detection tool we have, If you see something, it’s important that you notify us immediately. We have a team of individuals that can help minimize damage and examine evidence.

DoIT's Cybersecurity team offers assessments, gap analysis and workshops around increasing your security awareness and protecting your digital footprint.
Security Policies and Compliance
The Cybersecurity team provides official policies, standards, and data classification guidelines to ensure you are meeting the required security measures for various risk categories. They also provide vendor and contract reviews and offers assistance with data use agreements.

It is the responsibility of all faculty and staff to familiarize themselves with Stony Brook University's IT policies and adhere to them. The Division of Information Technology also concerns itself with supporting the University’s obligation to protect the privacy of its student and personnel records by ensuring all personal data is kept confidential.
