  1. In an effort to maintain efficiency and reliability of computer equipment at Stony Brook University, DoIT's Customer Engagement and Support department has instituted software support standards.

  2. Google Apps for Education is the primary email system for everyone at Stony Brook University except Hospital employees and members of the School of Medicine and School of Dental Medicine. Stony Brook's Google Apps suite of products includes Mail, Calendar, Drive, Contacts, Sites, Groups, Hangouts and a host of other applications to enhance communication and real-time collaboration across campus.

  3. Yammer is Stony Brook's internal social network. It is an online environment for discussion and conversation. It can help you get work done and support teamwork and collaboration across the institution.

  4. Google Chat is a collaborative messaging tool. It allows you to chat, share content, schedule meetings, and more in a shared space with your team or 1-to-1. And all of your teams can have their own chat Spaces, for collaborating on documents and assigning team tasks. You can even create external Rooms to collaborate with people outside Stony Brook.

  5. VPN

    Stony Brook's virtual private network (VPN) allows access to certain Stony Brook applications, resources, and services from off-campus.   
    NOTE:  The VPN requires a Stony Brook email address and Duo 2-Step login prior to downloading and installing the VPN.  

  6. Google Drive provides a single place to store, create, sync, and share documents, files, and folders of all types.  Access files anywhere - at your desk, from home, or on a mobile device. 

  7. The AIP Windows plugin classifies, protects and encrypts documents to ensure only specific people can access them in email.  

  8. MySBfiles is a network storage option for all students, faculty, and staff. Up to 2 GB of data can be stored in your personal MySBfiles which is backed up regularly on an automated basis by University servers. You can access your MySBfiles from on or off campus using a Web browser. 

    Note: Users on the UHMC domain will use their Home Directory ("U Drive") instead of MySBfiles. For information please call the UHMC Help Desk at 4-HELP.

    IMPORTANT UPDATE:  Access to MySBfiles via a web browser at https://mysbfiles.stonybrook.edu or SFTP will be discontinued as of 7/31/24.

     

  9. SOLAR is Stony Brook University's enterprise-wide, self-service system which provides faculty, staff, and students with online access to manage personal information. Students use SOLAR to register for classes, print schedules, view and pay bills, update personal contact information, view transcripts, and submit student employment timesheets. Employees use SOLAR to update personal contact information, view vacation/sick accruals, print class rosters, submit grades, and much more.

     

  10. Most SINC Sites may be reserved for classes. In addition, some computer classrooms are reserved exclusively for course use and are not used as open labs for students.

  11. WolfieNet-Guest is  to be used by visitors of the University's West Campus to attend conferences, seminars, workshops, etc.

  12. Google Mail is the preferred email system at Stony Brook University for faculty, staff, and students on West Campus, Southampton, Manhattan, and select departments within the Health Sciences Center.

    Members of Stony Brook Medicine, including Stony Brook Hospital and the School of Dental Medicine, will continue to use Microsoft Exchange for email due to HIPAA compliance requirements.

  14. Stony Brook University's Visa and Immigration Services has gone electronic with accessVIS, an online portal for students, faculty, and staff. The accessVIS system allows electronic submission of immigration requests to Visa and Immigration Services and provides a source of communication for updates and notifications.

    The InCommon Certificate Service provides unlimited SSL, encryption and code signing PKI certificates for all domains owned by Stony Brook University for one fixed annual fee, allowing Stony Brook to issue certificates based on technical and security needs. The certificates are generated through Sectigo, a trusted commercial certificate authority.
