Stony Brook subscribes to three (3) Respondus tools

Respondus LockDown Browser and Respondus Monitor are 2 parts of a virtual proctoring system used with tests and quizzes in Brightspace.
Respondus 4 is an application that allows instructors to create tests and question pools, offline, and then upload them to Brightspace. You can also use Respondus 4 to print exams.

*** Note: Respondus Lockdown Browser & Respondus Monitor are NOT available in the SINC Sites or on the Virtual SINC Site. Both require students' install software on their personal machines.***

Lockdown Browser and Monitor

Early Exits in Lockdown Browser

If a student participates in Early Exit, when the instructor visits the Lockdown Browser Dashboard the early exit will be noted in the bottom left hand corner of the assessment (orange circle with a number in it.) The number in the orange circle will be in direct relationship to the number of early exits registered for the assessment.
When the instructor selects the drop down menu for the assessment that registers the early exit, they will see an option to "Review Early Exits.'"
Once this option is selected a list of the Early Exits for this exam will populate for the instructor.

Respondus Monitor

Respondus Monitor Uses the student's webcam to prevent cheating during non-proctored exams. Learn more about Respondus Monitor.

NOTE: Students will need access to a webcam for this tool. Respondus Monitor is not available in the SINC Sites or on the Virtual SINC Site.

When setting up online exams/quizzes in Brightspace, if you check the box "Require Respondus LockDown Browser for this exam", your students are required use the Respondus LockDown Browser. Students must install the software before they can take the exam. This custom browser prevents Internet searches, accessing notes or other applications on the computer, or copying the exam questions themselves, among other things.

Respondus 4 - Create and Manage Exams

Get Respondus 4 - Faculty

Respondus is an application that allows instructors to create tests and question pools offline, and then upload them to Brightspace.

Faculty can use Respondus 4 from any computer using the Virtual SINC Site or download Respondus 4.0 for only Windows computers from Softweb:

Log into Softweb with your NetID username and password to log in.
Under Faculty & Staff Applications, select Respondus.
- Be sure to download both the Win 10 / Win 11 - Direct Download and the Respondus SBU License installer. When they are both downloaded click on each EXE file in your downloads folder to run them.
- If you are prompted for a license for Respondus when you open Respondus 4.0, be sure to run the Respondus SBU License installer. This will automatically add the license and password needed to start using the Respondus 4.0
- If your machine is managed by DoIT, you will need to call 631-632-9800. If your machine is managed by Hospital IT, call 631-444-4357 (4-HELP)
