All members of oru campus received this message via email from The Division of Information Technology on Tuesday, May 19th around 9am.

As we approach the end of the semester, the Division of Information Technology (DoIT) is looking ahead toward a more innovative, secure, and efficient future for Stony Brook University. As a flagship institution, we are committed to building a faster, more resilient digital backbone that supports the excellence of our campus community.

As we move forward, our work is guided by three core priorities:
  • Innovation: Moving toward the modern tools that a flagship university deserves, ensuring our community has access to high-performance, industry-standard technology.
  • Security: Protecting campus data and mitigating cybersecurity risks to ensure a safe digital environment for research and learning.
  • Efficiency: Optimizing our resources for better performance by retiring legacy systems to make room for modern, sustainable solutions.
The following upcoming initiatives represent our commitment to these themes. While these changes may seem significant, they are essential steps in our evolution. Please note that no immediate action is required today; detailed information will be sent to those impacted closer to project implementation dates.

Sunsetting WolfieNet-Secure

In the spirit of Innovation, eduroam will become our primary wireless network beginning on July 22, 2026, replacing WolfieNet-Secure. This change will allow Stony Brook to adopt the latest industry security standards and provide you with seamless Wi-Fi access at over 4,000 participating institutions worldwide.

Digital Backpack

Furthering our commitment to Innovation, we are launching a cloud-based virtual Windows computer lab. This service eliminates hardware barriers by allowing students to access specialized academic software directly through a web browser without any installation required.

Inactive Google Account Deletions

To enhance our Security posture, SBU will begin a phased deletion of Google accounts that have been inactive for three or more years beginning in October 2026. Notifications will be sent in August to collaborators who have access to files owned by these inactive accounts, giving them ample time to move important shared documents.

In the meantime, we encourage everyone to check ownership of their Google files for those files which you are not the owner of. Either make copies of these files, or move files to a shared drive. As the semester comes to a close, please pay special attention to files that student employees/assistants/interns have helped you with as they may be leaving the institution.

Storage Limits

To improve Efficiency and ensure sustainable use of our resources, SBU will implement storage quotas for Google Workspace on June 1, 2026. While our current institutional usage is nearly three times our allotted limit, most users are already well under these new limits (400GB for Faculty/Staff; 75GB for Students; and 400GB for Shared Drives) and will not be impacted.

Every Seawolf will receive an email this week notifying you of your Google usage amounts. Those that are at or over the new limits will be given an increased storage amount of 10% above their current usage in order to accommodate your Google account while you work to reduce your individual storage, move documents to a shared drive, or partner with DoIT to identify an alternative available solution for your data storage needs.

Looking Ahead

Our goal is to ensure that when you return for the new semester, our digital environment is stronger and more resilient than ever before. Thank you for your partnership as we continue to modernize and protect Stony Brook University.
