Protect the Work Near and Dear to Your Heart: A Seawolf’s Guide to File Ownership
Whether it’s a groundbreaking research paper, a meticulously crafted department budget, or the planning doc for a campus tradition, we all have those files that are "near and dear" to our hearts. These documents represent hours of hard work and collaboration.
But here is a heart-wrenching thought: If those files aren't in the right place, they could disappear forever.
At Stony Brook, we want to ensure your legacy remains intact. To do that, we need to talk about the difference between "My Drive" and "Shared Drives."
We’re asking every member of the Stony Brook community to perform a quick audit of their most important work:
Identify Your "Must-Haves": Open the 5 files you rely on most. These are the ones you’d be devastated to lose.
Check the Owner: Click the Share in the top right. Is the owner an individual? Is it someone who is still with your department?
The Big Move: If those files are sitting in your "My Drive" (or someone else's), move them into your Departmental Shared Drive.
Pro Tip: Don't have a Shared Drive? Request one ! Google will handle the ownership transfer automatically!
