Respondus LockDown Browser is a custom browser that locks down the testing environment. Respondus Monitor is a webcam proctoring service that works in conjunction with LockDown Browser.

When using Respondus Monitor for proctoring with webcam and screen recording, you may encounter missing videos on student submissions that indicate “Not finished” in the duration column. This could be due to a variety of reasons:

  • The student exits the startup sequence. This is usually due to technical difficulties.
  • The student exits the exam early i.e. no submission occurs during that session.
  • The student's computer disconnects from the server such that the video can no longer be streamed.

When any of the above situations occur, LockDown Browser attempts to reconnect and does not terminate the exam attempt. The available video may be shorter than the actual exam attempt and may have gaps in it.

  • Note: If the disconnect occurs shortly after the exam begins, there may be no video past that point.

Even if the exam was submitted during that session, the disruption in connectivity to the server results in no proper “end_of_exam” notification being sent from LockDown Browser to the server. The “Not finished” status is applied, and a priority score is never assigned.

  • Note: Webcam sessions are not the same as exam attempts and instead refer to entrances to the Respondus Monitor startup sequence.

In some cases, there will be other attempts with a time duration specified, indicating a successful submission. If one is available, then expand the plus sign next to the student's name to view all attempts.
