Calling and Texting Over Wi-Fi
If you are having trouble making calls or texts on campus from your phone, calling and texting over WiFi might work for you. With WiFi calling, you can make or receive a phone call if you have a WiFi connection in an area with poor or no cellular coverage. Many mobile devices and carriers now support making calls and sending text messages over WiFi when cell service is poor or unavailable. These steps will demonstrate how to enable Calling and Texting over WiFi:
Prequisistes
- WiFi is turned On.
- An active wireless Internet connection - WiFi calling works best when connected to WolfieNet-Secure.
- An active WolfieNet-Secure network requires an active Stony brook University NetID network account.
- A WiFi calling compatible device with appropriate settings enabled - depends on device manufacturer, OS, and cellular service carrier.

- When using WiFi calling, you'll need to enter or confirm your address on Campus for emergency services.
- Some devices or cellular carriers may not support calling over wifi. (See Carrier List Below)
- In some cases an active cellular network signal is required to turn on the WiFi Calling, (only afterward it is not needed), and you may need to move to a different physical location to complete this process.
- Please note that your call may temporarily drop while walking between access points while on a WiFi Call.

iPhone (iOS)

- Turn on Wi-Fi calling in Settings > Phone (or Cellular) > WiFi Calling. You might need to enter or confirm your address for emergency services.
- If WiFi Calling is available, you’ll see Wi-Fi after your carrier name in the status bar. Then your calls will use WiFi Calling.

- In the Settings app, pull down the notification shade and long-press the WiFi icon to enter WiFi settings.
- Scroll to the bottom and select WiFi Preferences.
- Tap Advanced.
- Select WiFi Calling and flip the switch to On.
