New Gmail has several features supported by Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, for example Smart Reply, Nudges, and Smart Compose. These features allow users to be more efficient with email. According to Google, “the mechanism is similar to how emails get processed for spam or malware detection and spellcheck”; no one is reading the emails.1

You won't see Nudges, Smart Replies, or Smart Compose all the time, just when applicable. For example, Smart Replies will show for emails that can be answered with a relatively simple reponses ("Thanks" or "Here it is", for example).

If you prefer, these features can be turned off/on for Gmail in your Gmail settings.
