Why is the University collecting this information about me?

  • The University is collecting this information for internal auditing/records/statistics/analytics of the guest wireless network.

Where is this information being stored?

  • Data is being stored on secure internal servers belonging to the Division of Information Technology.

How long will this information be stored?

  • Data will be stored on a sliding time scale relevant to disk space and data volume.

Why do we need to require Guest authentication?

  • Leaving unauthenticated wireless access facilitates anonymous access to the Internet and the downloading of unlawful content.
  • This configuration potentially leaves the University liable for copyright violations according to OCILLA safe harbor requirements.
  • This change was recommended and accepted as part of the HEOA Peer-to-Peer File Sharing Plan Review dated 4/16/2014.

What are the benefits of enabling email verification along with other identification requirements?

  • It will deter unlawful or questionable behavior using the Stony Brook network.
  • It gives the University a method of contact for those found to be downloading copyrighted material using Stony Brook resources.
  • Doing so will encourage those with Stony Brook credentials to authenticate rather than utilize the guest network.
