John Passaro

The Architect of the Possible

For nearly a quarter-century, John has served as a high-octane engine driving Stony Brook University forward. He doesn’t just manage projects; he specializes in the “art of the possible,” transforming abstract, ambitious concepts into tangible, operational successes. As a linchpin of the Enterprise Project Management Office for the last decade, John is the force behind the scenes, ensuring that the university’s most complex initiatives cross the finish line.

The Professional Powerhouse

John brings a rare "dual-threat" capability to the PMO. With 15+ years in technical and application support, he possesses deep-rooted technical fluencies that complement his strategic leadership. He is a Certified Project Management Professional (PMP) with a Master’s in Information Systems Management, making him equally comfortable in a server room or a boardroom.

His expertise spans the entire project lifecycle, with a demonstrated mastery in:

  • Project Portfolio Management & IT Strategy: Aligning high-level vision with execution.
  • Enterprise-Wide Implementations: Navigating large-scale system migrations and integrations.
  • Business Process Re-engineering: Analyzing and optimizing workflows for maximum efficiency.
  • Risk Mitigation & Cost Control: Keeping complex programs on track and under budget.
  • Stakeholder Relations: Acting as a master of conflict resolution and cross-functional supervision.
Orchestrator by Day, Athlete by Night

John brings the same intensity to the rink as he does to his projects. When he isn’t shaping the future of SBU, he trades his Program Manager's hat for a hockey helmet, competing on multiple teams. His drive for "personal records" doesn't stop at work; as a dedicated live music enthusiast, he is constantly on the hunt to break his own record for the most concerts attended in a single year.

The Ultimate Multi-Tasker

If you think managing a university's portfolio is tough, try looking at John’s current personal "To-Do" list. An efficient multitasker by nature, John is currently applying his project management rigor to his biggest life milestones yet:

  • Project "I Do": Planning an upcoming wedding with his fiancée.
  • Resource Allocation: Navigating the logistics of finding a new home for a blended family of five (including his son and two future step-daughters).
  • Budget Management: Strategizing the funding for two simultaneous college educations—one for his son, a current college senior, and one for his future step-daughter, a high school senior.

Whether he is traveling with his fiancée, cheering at a concert, or leading a multi-million dollar system integration, John remains a defining force at Stony Brook—a leader who meets every goal with a blend of technical precision and human connection.
