VMware is a virtualization and cloud computing software provider. Under certain circumstances, faculty and students may obtain this software free of charge under the VMware Academic Program. Staff using VMware products to support the infrastructure of the University must purchase licenses.

Faculty, Researchers and Students

VMware Academic Program

  • A membership-based program designed specifically for the academic community (Qualifying Academic Institutions)
  • Access to free software licenses for research (not-for-profit research projects) and academic instruction only
  • Discounted licenses for campus infrastructure (IT department or other infrastructure departments of an eligible institution)
  • VMware Software is available at http://stonybrook.onthehub.com under the "VMware" tab.

Please note that "free" software at that location is only licensed for instruction and research. It is not licensed for infrastructure use.  Software packages can be downloaded only once per individual.

Highly discounted licenses are available via a special contract with VMware.
