With the ever-growing number of computer devices on campus, finding a way to conserve energy and save on energy costs is increasing. By using Verdiem Surveyor, we will be able to capture energy usage on workstations in the areas serviced by Customer Engagement and Support, which will then translate to data that we can use institutionally to map out savings on our overall energy costs.

What is Verdiem Surveyor and how does it help?

Surveyor by Verdiem is a software tool to help monitor and manage power usage on workstations used by the organization.

The use of this software will help in monitoring power usage of campus machines to which power management efficiencies will be determined to help the University to conserve power

Should I do anything special with my laptop once Verdiem Surveyor is installed?

You do not need to do anything special with a laptop for the power monitering by Verdiem Surveyor to take place. 

Should I notice any changes once the Verdiem Surveyor agent is installed?

There should be no noticeable effects from the Verdiem Surveyor agent during the use of your machine.

What data does Verdiem Surveyor collect from my computer and for how long will it be stored?

Verdiem Surveyor collects the following data:

  • Device Name
  • Last time connected to Surveyor server
  • IP Address
  • Operating System version (Windows XP / Vista / 7 / 8)
  • Manufacturer and model of computer
  • Computer type (Desktop / MiniTower / Laptop)
  • Last logged on user
  • Times machine has been started up / Shut down / put to sleep / monitor turned off.

The record of the existence of your machine will remain, but any data collected would be purged if your machine has not reported to the server after a fixed amount of time.

Will I still be able to remote desktop via VPN to my computer while running Verdiem Surveyor?

Provided you use the VPN and leave your campus computer powered on, Verdiem Surveyor will have no impact on your ability to remotely connect to your computer.

Will Verdiem Surveyor still be able to collect data if my computer is turned off?

If you turn off your computer Verdiem Surveyor will not be able to collect power usage data.
