Podcasting & YouTube

A podcast is a method to deliver content, mostly audio and/or video. The two main advantages of podcasting over streaming is that the podcast is subscribed to and content is delivered in a way that makes it accessible even when you are not at your computer.

What is a Podcast? What are its Advantages?

A podcast is a method to deliver content, mostly audio and/or video. The two main advantages of podcasting over streaming is that the podcast is subscribed to and content is delivered in a way that makes it accessible even when you are not at your computer.

DoIT's TLT department uses the SBCapture system for closed-course video podcasting and YouTube for open content. Instructors can upload content directly to SBCapture themselves, or use the Video Drop Off Form to have a member of the TLT staff assist.

An advantage of using the SBUVideo YouTube account is that in order to make the videos as accessible as possible, TLT captions all of the videos. TLT creates playlists on YouTube (not the same as a podcast, but in most cases is satisfactory for video distribution).

Portability + Flexibility

The fact that it becomes portable, means students can watch or listen to course content when it is convenient for them (e.g. from their computer, in a SINC site, from their iPod, iPhone, or iPad). Students really appreciate this flexibility.

Subscription Advantages

The advantage of a subscription is that the student only needs to click on the subscription link once. After that, the podcast is added to their iTunes library and any time new content is added, iTunes will automatically download it to the student and highlight for them that there is something new they haven't listened to or watched yet.
