Blackboard is the University's online learning management system (LMS) that is designed to facilitate communication between students and instructors. It enables faculty to post their syllabus and other course-related materials in one place on the Web for student access. Blackboard provides different communication features such as wikis, blogs, and discussion boards to disseminate and share information.

All courses are put into Blackboard, but instructors need to activate the course before students will be able to access it. All registered students (undergraduate and graduate) receive a Blackboard account at the beginning of their first semester at Stony Brook University.

Log in to Blackboard at NetID and NetID password is required for authentication.

Many faculty use Blackboard to upload syllabi and other course materials, but there are numerous interactive tools available as well:

  • Discussion board
  • E-mail
  • Assignment submission with plagiarism detection
  • Online chat with whiteboard for visual demonstrations
  • Blogs and wikis
  • Tests and surveys

Course Content:
Course material accessed from Blackboard, SB Connect, SB Capture or a Stony Brook Course website is for the exclusive use of students who are currently enrolled in the course. Content from these systems cannot be reused or distributed without written permission of the instructor and/or the copyright holder.

Duplication of materials protected by copyright, without permission of the copyright holder is a violation of the Federal copyright law, as well as a violation of Stony Brook's Academic Integrity and Student Conduct Codes.
