Audio Visual Services provides numerous services to enhance and facilitate classroom instruction. Service counters in the Javits Lecture Center, the Health Sciences Center, and Frey Hall each provide different aspects of support.

Javits Lecture Center Service Counter

The Javits Service Counter is the primary location for Audio Visual Services. It provides the most comprehensive services, and is the central hub of the department.

The Health Science Center Service Counter is a satellite location for Audio Visual Services. It primarily serves the specific needs of the HSC and Stony Brook Medicine community.

The Frey Hall Service Counter is a satellite location for Audio Visual Services. It primarily serves the specific needs of the advanced technology learning spaces within Frey Hall.

Classroom Media Systems

Smart Lecture Halls

Smart Lecture Halls are instructional spaces that seat over 100 students and are typically equipped with an installed dual-booting Mac Mini, PA and amplified media audio, digital projection, and an interactive monitor for faculty to annotate directly over presentation materials.

Smart Classrooms are instructional spaces that seat under 100 students and are typically equipped with an installed dual-booting Mac Mini, PA and amplified media audio, digital projection, and an interactive monitor for faculty to annotate directly over presentation materials.

Computer Station Classrooms are equipped instructional spaces that include an installed dual-booting Mac Mini, amplified media audio, digital projection, and standard media connections for user-owned equipment.

Specialty Learning Spaces

Specialty Learning Spaces are spaces equipped to foster specific types of learning. These spaces include, but are not limited to, Distance Learning and Active Learning Classes. Equipment varies based on the learning goals for the space, but could be equipped with Video Teleconferencing capabilities, interactive display technologies, web- and document-camera capabilities, and small-group workstations.

Other Technology-Enhanced Classrooms vary in their installed equipment, but at a minimum include amplified media audio, digital projection, and standard media connections for user-owned equipment.

Portable Equipment

Full-time Staff and Faculty can request portable equipment for classroom instructional purposes from our Service Counter location in the Javits Lecture Center.

Consumable Supplies

All General Assignment Classrooms are stocked prior to the beginning of the semester, and then proactively at regular intervals during the semester. Classrooms supplies consist of black markers, dry-erase markers, and cleaning supplies for whiteboard-equipped classrooms, and white chalk and erasers for blackboard-equipped classrooms. 

In addition, instructors can request a restocking of specific rooms or stop by any of the Audio Visual Service Counters for supplies, at any point during the semester.

Schedule note: Upon changes to the University calendar or emergency class cancellations (snow, disaster, etc), Audio Visual Services closes one half hour after the end of the last scheduled class. Outstanding equipment loans for that day are expected to be returned by that time.

Who can sign out AV equipment?
Faculty and Full-Time Staff members may borrow equipment from either of the Service Counters. Teaching assistants, Ph.D. candidates, and undergraduate students may borrow equipment for classroom instruction, but must present authorization from a Faculty or Full-Time Staff member in advance confirming the following information:
  1. The name and Stony Brook Student ID number of the requester,
  2. The academic purpose for the equipment being borrowed,
  3. A list of the equipment being requested,
  4. Responsibility for the correct operation of the equipment,
  5. Safe, timely return of the equipment.
Equipment will not be released to any student without a letter on file. An email from a Faculty or Full-Time Staff member's official Stony Brook University ".edu" account may be sent to avservices@stonybrook.edu in lieu of a hard copy letter (click here for a sample).
 
Equipment borrowed must be returned to the Service Counter it is requested from, and all requesters will be asked to present their University ID card.
