DoIT will begin rolling out a new Voice-over-Internet-Protocol (VoIP) Unified Communications system to all West Campus employees on a building-by-building basis beginning May 24, 2016 with a tentative completion date of May 2017. Those who already have a University telephone will be receiving a new handset and the ability to listen to voicemail through email when their building is migrated. By the beginning of 2017, an exciting new suite of unified communication features will be introduced, including mobility options that will allow users to choose which device they answer calls on (cell phone, desk phone, home phone, PC/laptop, or tablet) and “presence” which will allow users to see the status of their coworkers’ availability. This initiative will help to consolidate telephone, voicemail and messaging services into a single, secure and reliable, state-of-the-art communications service for the campus. Stony Brook's existing provider, Unify (formerly Siemens), will continue to provide support and service to Stony Brook University and Stony Brook Medicine.

A small pilot program involving DoIT staff members began on April 19. DoIT Data Network Services is in the process of collecting feedback and data to further test, troubleshoot, and document questions pertaining to usage and training.
