Installing Windows Updates on a Windows 7 Machine

Starting January 14, 2020, Microsoft will no longer support the Windows 7 operating system.. As a result, DoIT and your local IT Support is working with departments to move to supported operating systems prior to this date.

Why Won’t Windows 7 Be Supported Anymore?

After January 14th, 2020, Microsoft will no longer put out security updates to patch new vulnerabilities after that date, Windows 7 computers will still function, but because they will not be updated, they become a security risk for individuals and the campus network as a whole.  Microsoft's announcement for Windows 7 end of support

What needs to be done?

  • Your computer’s Operating System will need to be upgraded to Windows 10.
  • Your computer may need to be replaced if it cannot support Windows 10,
  • DoIT can help train users on the Windows 10 Operating System if needed.
  • For software that cannot support Windows 10, an extended support license will need to be purchased from Microsoft.

Installing Updates on a Windows 7 Machine

  1. Click the Start button located in the lower left corner of the taskbar

  2. Click on All Programs

  3. Select Windows Update from the list of programs

  4. Click on the Check for updates link

  5. Windows will search for the latest critical updates. Click Install updates to download and install important software updates

  6. Allow Windows to download and install the updates

  7. If prompted to restart, click Restart Now

  8. Repeat steps 4-7 until there are no new important updates available
