Some students are reporting that they are experiencing issues while using Print From Anywhere on their Mac computers.

When installing Print From Anywhere on your Mac, please make sure you have uninstalled all other versions of Print From Anywhere on your Mac first.  Having multiple installations of the Print From Anywhere software may cause issues.  Make sure you have at least Mac OS 10.7.5 or higher installed.  To find out what version of the Mac OS you have on your computer, click the Apple menu in the upper-left corner of your screen and choose About this Mac.

The following instructions explain how to work around the most common issues that have been reported.

The NetID dialog box doesn't show up when printing with Print From Anywhere

If the NetID dialog box does not appear when you're using Print From Anywhere on your Mac computer, make sure "Popup.app" is running:

  1. Launch /Application/Utilities/Activity Monitor.app
  2. Make sure the process window comes up if not press the Command key
  3. In the drop down box on the upper right of the toolbar, make sure it lists "All Processes"
  4. Look for "Popup"

If "Popup" is not on the list of all processes, you can launch it:

  1. Double-click /Library/Application Support/Pharos/Popup.app
  2. Try to send a print job
  3. From the Apple Menu (in the upper-left corner of your screen), launch "System Preferences"
  4. Select Users & Groups
  5. Make sure the user is selected, and click on the "Login Items" tab on the upper-right
  6. If "Popup.app" is not in the list, drag and drop "Popup.app" onto the list of Login Items

You receive an "Unidentified Developer" or "Apple could not scan for malicious software" message when you install Step 3

Mac's display the "unidentified developer" message when it determines that software you are trying to install is not from a registered software developer.  This is what is causing the error message.  Print From Anywhere is a program that you can install on your Mac, however, it may not be recognized by Apple.  To work around this issue, follow these instructions:

  1. When you try to install Print From Anywhere, you may get a prompt asking if you want to install the program even though it is from an "unidentified developer."  Allow the installation to continue.
  2. If you don't get a prompt, right-click the installation file and choose Open from the drop-down menu

You receive a "Popup Install Failed" message when you install Print From Anywhere

When installing the Print From Anywhere client, you may see an error message that tells you the popup install has failed.  To work around this issue, follow these instructions to install the popup application separately:

  1. Download and install the Popup software directly from Pharos Systems Intl:  https://community.pharos.com/docs/DOC-1650

PFA Installer says it was successful, but no printer is available

After running the Print from Anywhere installer, and you saw it was scuccessfully installed, however when opening  System Preferences > Printers & Scanners  reveals there is no new printer to chose.  This seems to be caused by Xerox drivers not installing properly.  Try the following:

  1. Try downloading and installing the Xerox printer drivers first before running the PFA installer.  The driver required can be found here:  https://support.apple.com/kb/DL1735?locale=en_US

The second solution requires the use of Terminal, if you are unfamiliar with using Terminal you proceed at your own risk.  Note that any typos can have damaging, irreversable consequences, as there is no undo in Terminal.

  1. Open Terminal.app found under /Applications/Utilites
  2. Copy and enter the following command:   /usr/sbin/lpadmin -D "SINC Pharos Personal Queue" -p SINC_Pharos_Personal_Queue  -v "popup://elmo.sinc.stonybrook.edu:515/mainq_web" -E -P "/Library/Printers/PPDs/Contents/Resources/Xerox Phaser 5550DN.gz" -o printer-is-shared=false
  3. Once done, confirm the printer is listed under System Preferences > Printers & Scanners

To uninstall the any of the Print From Anywhere software

If you would like to uninstall the Print From Anywhere software perform any or all of the following steps: (note: uninstalling printer drivers is typically unnessesary)

  1. To remove the printer queue open "System Preferences > Printers & Scanners" then select SINC Pharos Personal Queue and click the "-" button below.
  2. To remove the Pharos Popup Software use the menu bar in Finder and click on "Go > Computer". Open your hard drive then navigate to "/Library/Application Support/Pharos/Utilites/Uninstaller".
  3. To remove Xerox printer drivers use the menu bar in Finder and click on "Go > Computer". Open your hard drive then navigate to "/Library/Printers".  Delete the Xerox folder.  Note, this will remove all Xerox drivers from your system, and is typically unnecessary.
