Eduroam
Stony Brook has enabled Eduroam, the secure, world-wide roaming access service developed for the international research and education community.
Eduroam allows students, researchers and staff from participating institutions to obtain Internet connectivity across campus and when visiting other participating institutions by simply opening their laptop or mobile device.
When a user connects to eduroam from the Stony Brook University campus, they will be prompted to enter their school's credentials for authentication.
Eduroam facilitates travelers from academic institutions by allowing them to gain network access with minimal configuration and no need for the visiting institution to grant them the access explicitly.
This benefits visiting faculty, academics traveling for conferences and collaborative work, study abroad students, visitors attending NCAA activities, and even regional academic exchange.
User credentials are not revealed to the institution at which an eduroamer joins, but instead are only revealed to their home institution, providing an extra measure of comfort for visiting users. Thus, the eduroam network also provides a simple and automatic guest provisioning system. A participating institution may rely on a visitor's home institution to authenticate them for the duration of their stay.
Currently in all campus locations (including Southampton), except for Stony Brook Hospital/East Campus locations.
A legitimate .edu email address from participating institutions is required to use the service. Stony Brook University members should use the SecureW2 onboarding tool and login with their NetID name and password to securely connect.
Users from visiting institutions should consult their IT department and must use their school's User ID and password that has been assigned to them (e.g. jsmith@nyu.edu or js123@nyu.edu).
Today's common operating systems including Microsoft Windows, Apple OSX, many smartphone OSs, and most current Linux distributions all ship with 802.1X supplicants, making joining Eduroam simple for users, and simple to support for educational institutions.
Stony Brook University members should use the SecureW2 onboarding tool as well as their NetID username and password to securely onboard and connect.
