Brightspace access & support information for all Winter & Spring 2024 Stony Brook instructors

Brightspace Courses

Brightspace course sites have been created for all Winter & Spring 2024 (West Campus, HSC & Southampton).

To access Brightspace, go to brightspace.stonybrook.edu  and click the Login button. Login with your NetID username and password.

Under My Courses on the left,  you can see your courses for each semester (scroll to the right to see by semester). IF you do not see a course you are teaching, check SOLAR to be sure you are the instructor on record before submitting a service ticket at service.stonybrook.edu

Who has access?

Students are automagically added/dropped and you can add TA's and other instructors to your course if you wish.

If you are not using Brightspace OR  do not wish for your students to have access while you build your class, make your class inactive*.

*Once you have your course set up, remember to reactivate it so students have access prior to the beginning of the semester.

Can I reuse content?

Yes you can!

Your courses are currently active. We strongly recommend that you make your class inactive prior to copying content.

Why?  If you do not set your new course(s) to inactive and then copy content from old courses, students will receive notifications if they have opted into being notified of new content, new assignments, etc. Since, by default, "new announcements" are set for all, if you copy old announcements, all of the students in the new course will receive notifications (email and/or) text with the old announcements.

Third Party tools, such as Echo360 & VoiceThread, will need to be re-linked. Directions are available here.

Looking for old Blackboard content?

Content from all Blackboard courses from Fall 2021 -Spring 2023  is in the "Conversions" term on your My Courses section.

Syllabus Statements

You can add Required & IT syllabi statements directly from the Learning Object Repository (LOR) in Brightspace. For details visit using the LOR to add syllabi statements to your course on the Brightspace service page.

Need Help?

DoIT's Brightspace team has compiled Top 10 Brightspace Tips for Instructors, and you can find additional support information at brightspace.stonybrook.edu.

SUNY's Helpdesk provides support in addition to the Stony Brook team. Their support is available to instructors & students 7 days a week, nights and weekends. Visit online.suny.edu/help/ for hours and contact information. In the event that the SUNY help desk is busy, you will be transferred to Brightspace for support.

Brightspace team department visits

Stony Brook’s Brightspace team is interested in hearing about Brightspace experiences. We are happy to attend a departmental meeting or brainstorm with working groups across campus on how they can use Brightspace for communication, collaboration, assignments, quizzes, etc. It can be used for not for credit purposes too! Interested?  Please have your department submit a request online at: go.stonybrook.edu/brightspacechats
